British Man of Syrian descent named in the Manchester synagogue terrorist attack on ‘Jewish Holy Day’
Manchester synagogue attack
On October 2, 2025the Manchester synagogue attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall shattered the sanctity of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. What should have been a day of prayer and forgiveness became a scene of violence, loss, and heartbreak.
Two worshippers lost their lives, three others were hospitalized, and the attacker was fatally shot by police. In a devastating twist, authorities revealed that one victim may have been struck by a police bullet during the attempt to stop the assailant.
What Happened in the Manchester Synagogue Attack?
According to Greater Manchester Police, the suspect rammed his car into pedestrians before attacking worshippers with a knife. He was wearing what appeared to be an explosives belt — later determined to be fake. Officers arrived within seven minutes and fatally shot the attacker at the synagogue entrance.
The victims were identified as Adrian Daulby (53) and Melvin Cravitz (66), both respected members of the Jewish community. Three others remain in serious condition.
A Painful Revelation: Police Bullet May Have Claimed a Life
Chief Constable Stephen Watson confirmed forensic analysis showed one victim died from a gunshot wound. Since the attacker had no firearm, the shot is believed to have come from police during their attempt to stop him. Another hospitalized victim also sustained a gunshot injury.
Watson explained that worshippers were likely clustered near the entrance to block the assailant, creating tragic confusion in the heat of the moment.
“This injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of police actions,” Watson said.
Rising Antisemitism and Preceding Fear
The Manchester synagogue attack comes amid growing concern about antisemitism in the UK. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis condemned the assault as part of “an unrelenting wave of Jew hatred” spreading both online and in public spaces.
“this is the day we hoped we would never see, but which deep down, we knew would come,” he wrote.
His words underscore the painful truth that even sacred spaces are no longer immune to extremist hatred.
Ethical Dilemmas: Police, Precision, and Accountability
The tragedy raises urgent questions about law enforcement’s role in high-risk situations:
- How can police balance speed with precision in chaotic scenarios?
- What safeguards exist to reduce collateral harm?
- How should accountability be addressed when protective actions lead to unintended deaths?
These are not only legal issues but moral ones, requiring transparent answers and public dialogue.
Resilience in the Face of Violence
Despite the grief, there is courage. Congregants at Heaton Park physically stood between the attacker and their sacred space. Their bravery highlights the resilience of faith communities facing hatred.
Across the UK, synagogues and other religious institutions are now reassessing security, while civic leaders call for vigilance and unity.
